I’ll write a little about why i think Gamergate WON. This is purely my opinion and my politics may not be the same as others in Gamergate, since we come from all sides.

Now that 2.5 years have passed, Gamergate in itself is obviously not as active as it was on year one; we are still strong as a watchdog and active everyday in twitter and reddit, but big coordinated campaigns and a wide range of articles talking about us seem to happen only from time to time. This makes some people say that Gamergate ended, or that it has become irrelevant, or the more delusional “Gamergate lost”. Well, i’m kind of sorry for these last ones, cause Gamergate won big time.

In fact, the reason why you don’t hear so much about GG as before is because it was so successful that it escaped the original purpose and it became “mainstream”. And i explain:

Gamergate was born as a pushback against unethical journalism in videogames, and the censorship, corruption, and political correctness that was taking a grip on the medium. As many people outside gaming has acknowledged, we were the first to stand firmly against the social justice warriors agendas, and resist the misinformation attacks from the media. After two years of that, we have confirmations from people inside the industry that game developers are actually on GGs side, but they were afraid to speak, precisely because of all the things we spoke of, precisely because if they spoke, they would be demonized by the media, fired, and blacklisted, because the media is controlled by dishonest ideologically driven journalists.

Our firm stands through so many times being demonized gave people from other hobbies and other areas of life the determination to speak up and stand firm too. This kept growing and growing until the concept of unethical journalism and the fight against censorship and PC became something that the average Joe is preoccupied. You just have to take a look at the US to see it. Right now there’s widely acknowledged that journalism, not just gaming journalism, but ALL journalism, is unethical and dishonest. Trust in the media is in an all-time low. People even trust more Donald Trump than the media, and it’s not as if he’s a trustworthy guy!

Speaking of Trump, there you have another example. Despite the claims from the media and far leftist that all people who voted for Trump are nazis (suddenly nazis went from about 5k to 50 million!), the truth is that his victory came in part because of people preoccupied for their jobs and income, and in part by people preoccupied by media corruption, censorship and political correctness. The fact that he won is an indicator that this fights are now on the public sphere, and not just relegated to gaming. In that sense, we could even say that those who accuse Gamergate of putting Trump in the presidency are “right”. And i put it in quotes because they claim this is because GG is right wing, or even alt right, and now suddenly alt right and nazis are half the population. Far from the truth, all studies done on GG show that we are widely left leaning (like myself), we are just tired of this far left radical attitude. Videogames, ironically, serve me to give a good example: The left is like a videogame we like a lot, but then the fanbase is pure cancer, so we either stay away from it, laugh at them, or try to correct it to ensure that new players are not driven out by their stupidity before they can enjoy the game. I’m probably on this third group, though i’m also known for diving into the second.

What i mean with all this, is that GG was the first shoot, in what has become a wide mainstream cultural war. As well as the incident with Nathan Grayson was the “Archduke of Austria” of Gamergate; the event that set in motion the gears that would eventually lead to Gamergate; Gamergate itself was the Archduke of Austria that set in motion the gears for a widespread battle against (or for) censorship, political correctness, and unethical journalism, which in a way, led to many people, including left leaning people, to reject Hillary and vote for Trump, even if the guy has his own set of problems and we don’t exactly like him (Ok i like him as a source of memes, but that’s outside politics). And he won. And that gave even more people the courage to speak up (because during the elections, how many people came out to support Trump in public, out of fear?), and now there’s even a wider push against censorship and PC. So now, what it seemed like a lost battle, from just a few hundreds of thousands of people around the world, against a gaming media that controlled the narrative, and the monsters of mass media, has become a big war, with fair chances of winning.

So, in that context, how could a movement that fights for those things specifically in videogames be particularly relevant? Right now we would be just doing what everyone else does, just specifically on videogames. So Gamergate expanded into covering all kinds of topics, and ceased to be particularly relevant in a sea of people with the same ideas. We are still there, we are still a necessary watchdog, we still help each other and those affected by censorship, etc, but it wouldn’t really make sense that the general public relied on us, or even know us, when there’s now so much of them pushing back and on a so wide range of subjects.

The fact that Gamergate is not as relevant as before doesn’t mean we lost. It means they lost.

Voy a escribir un poco sobre porque creo que Gamergate GANÓ. Esto es puramente mi opinión, y mis políticas pueden no ser las mismas que otra gente en Gamergate, dado que venimos de todas partes.

Ahora que han pasado 2.5 años, Gamergate en sí mismo es obviamente menos activo que en el primer año; seguimos siendo fuertes como vigilantes y activos diariamente en twitter y reddit, pero grandes campañas coordinadas y gran cantidad de artículos hablando sobre nosotros parecen solo ocurrir de vez en cuando. Esto hace que alguna gente diga que Gamergate terminó, que se volvió irrelevante, o, los más ingenuos, que “Gamergate perdió”. Bueno, lo siento por estos últimos, porque Gamergate ganó a lo grande.

De hecho, la razón por la que ya no oyes tanto sobre GG como antes es porque tuvo tanto éxito que escapo a su propósito original y se volvió “mainstream”. Y me explico:

Gamergate nació como un rechazo contra la falta de ética periodística en videojuegos, y la censura, corrupción y corrección política que estaba atenazando el medio. Como mucha gente fuera del mundillo de los videojuegos ha admitido, fuimos los primeros en aguantar firmemente ante las agendas de justicia social, y resistir las campañas de desinformación de los medios. Tras dos años, tenemos confirmaciones de gente dentro de la industria revelando que la mayoría de desarrolladores están del lado de GG, pero tenían miedo de hablar, precisamente por las cosas contra las que luchamos, precisamente porque si hablaban, serían demonizados por los medios, despedidos, puestos en la lista negra, porque los medios están controlados por periodistas deshonestos movidos por ideología.

Nuestros aguantes durante tanto tiempo siendo demonizados les dieron determinación a gente de otros hobbies y áreas de la vida para decir lo que pensaban y permanecer firmes. Esto siguió creciendo y creciendo hasta que el concepto de periodismo sin ética y la lucha contra la censura y la CP se volvió algo que preocupa a cualquier ciudadano. No hay más que mirar a Estados unidos para ver esto. Ahora mismo es ampliamente compartida la opinión de que el periodismo, no el de videojuegos, sino todo, es corrupto y carente de ética. La confianza en los medios está en bajos históricos. La gente incluso confía más en Donald Trump que en los medios ¡y no es que el tipo sea muy confiable!

Hablando de Trump, aquí tenéis otro ejemplo. A pesar de las acusaciones de los medios y la extrema izquierda, clamando que todos los que votaron por Trump son nazis (¡de repente los nazis pasaron de 5.000 a 50 millones!), la verdad es que su victoria vino en parte por gente preocupada por sus trabajos y ganancias, y en parte por gente preocupada por la corrupción mediática, censura y corrección política. El hecho de que ganó es un indicador de que estas luchas están ahora en la esfera pública, y no solo relegadas a los videojuegos. En ese sentido, se podría decir que quienes acusan a Gamergate de poner a Trump en la presidencia tienen “razón”. Y lo pongo entre comillas porque ellos claman que esto se debe a que GG es de derechas, o incluso alt right; y de repente la alt right y los nazis son la mitad de la población. Lejos de la realidad, todos los estudios sobre GG han mostrado que nos movemos ampliamente en la izquierda (como yo mismo), pero estamos cansados de la actitud radical de la izquierda. Precisamente los videojuegos me sirven para dar un buen ejemplo: La izquierda es como un videojuego que nos gusta mucho, pero los fans son puro cáncer, así que o bien nos alejamos de ellos, o bien nos reímos de ellos, o bien intentamos corregirlos para asegurar que nuevos jugadores no huyen despavoridos por su estupidez antes de poder disfrutar el juego. Yo estoy probablemente en este tercer grupo, aunque soy bien conocido por zambullirme al segundo.

Lo que quiero decir con todo esto, es que GG fue el primer disparo, en lo que se ha convertido en una amplia y mainstream guerra cultural. Así como el incidente con Nathan Grayson fue el “Archiduque de Austria” de Gamergate, el evento que puso en movimiento los engranajes que llevarían eventualmente a Gamergate. Gamergate en sí mismo fue el Archiduque de Austria que puso en movimiento los engranajes para una amplia guerra contra (o por) la censura, la corrección política, y la falta de ética periodística, lo que en cierto modo, llevo a mucha gente, incluyendo de izquierdas, a rechazar a Hillary y votar por Trump, incluso si el tipo tiene su propio grupo de problemas y no seamos exactamente fans (Ok soy fan de los memes pero eso es aparte de las politicas). Y ganó. Y eso dio a aun más gente el coraje para hablar (porque durante las elecciones ¿Cuánta gente apoyo a Trump abiertamente, por culpa del miedo?), y ahora hay un aún más amplio rechazo a la censura y corrección política. Así que ahora, lo que parecía una batalla perdida de unos pocos cientos de miles de personas dispersas por el mundo, contra unos medios de videojuegos que controlaban la narrativa, y los monstruos de los medios masivos, se ha convertido en una gran guerra, con posibilidades de victoria.

Así que, en contexto, ¿Cómo podría un movimiento que lucha por esas cosas pero específicamente solo en videojuegos, ser particularmente relevante? Ahora mismo estaríamos haciendo solo lo que todo el mundo hace, pero específicamente en videojuegos. Así que Gamergate se expandió para cubrir todo tipo de tópicos, y ceso de ser particularmente relevante en un mar de gente con las mismas ideas. Todavía estamos ahí, todavía somos un vigilante necesario, todavía nos ayudamos entre nosotros y a aquellos afectados por la censura, etc, pero no tendría realmente sentido que el público general  dependiese de nosotros, o incluso nos conociese, cuando hay ahora tanta gente luchando por esto en tan amplia variedad de temas.

El hecho de que Gamergate no sea tan relevante como antes no significa que perdiéramos. Significa que ganamos.
